No Sex

Though not fully opened, the shop still drew a crowd of men recently, content to mill about the sex shop's entrance.

Nosex2: The new Adult World, located at 99 Plein Street, has a neighbourhood up in arms- and pens as well- as 128 businesses and residents sign a petition to ban the sex shop from their child-friendly neighbourhood.

Neighbourhood Says "No!" To Sex

Estelle Kriel, a personal assistant at an architectural office at 97A Plein Street, is unhappy to be next-door-neighbours with a porn shop. So much so, that she has hit the pavement to gather 128 signatures of businesses and residents who are equally unhappy with the new Adult World, located at 99 Plein Street.

"It's disgusting and degrading to the neighbourhood, to put that kind of business so close to a school, so that children have to walk past it everyday," said Mrs Kriel. "The sad part is, it was formerly a DA's office!"

"It's also near Parliament," said Mrs Kriel, who may have been inspired by that proximity to contact the Office Of The City Manager (Dr. Wallace Mgogi) and forward them the signatures she had collected.

Delores Meyer responded from city manager's office by fax, saying "Receipt is hereby acknowledged of your fax dated 29 July 2004. The content thereof has been referred to Mrs Christa Hugo- Coordinator Specialist Services... You will be hearing from her office in due course." A copy of that fax was provided to the CapeTowner.

But Mrs Kriel was not interested in simply waiting for "due course" and so focused on garnering media attention to the story as well as on maintain neighbourhood opposition to that Adult World branch. And as the CapeTowner soon discovered by canvassing the neighbourhood, that opposition seems firmly entrenched.

"I think it's disgusting," echoed Jean van der Merwe, an employee at neighbouring Joshua Door. "I think it's wrong to have the kind of store in the neighborhood. It used to be around the corner; why'd they move?"

When asked of the petition to close Adult World, Ms van der Merwe said "No, I didn't sign it. I wasn't there the day (Mrs Kriel came) but I know other employees there that did. It's to protect the children form being exposed to the type of people who hang out in those places- perverts and sick people," she said.

"I hate it," said Carmen Williams, shaking her head. A cashier at PhotoQuick at 61 Plein Street, Ms Williams echoed the words of the others we spoke to as well: "I think it's disgusting. And right across from Parliament! No, it's just not appropriate. We have groups of young children walking up and down this street everyday. Yes, I signed the petition. And I hope it does some good."

The manager of that Adult World was prevented from speaking even his own name to the CapeTowner, by a man who identified himself as Adult World's area manager. This area manager refused to comment as well, other than  to refer us to Adult World's media representative who had not gotten back to us by press time.

Meanwhile, Mrs Kriel says her employer, architect Nico van der Muelen, is having second thoughts about the property he just purchased at 97 Plein Street. "Mr van der Muelen is a good man; he wants to uplift the whole neighborhood. He wants to turn the property into an upscale café. But now, he's having second thoughts."

Perhaps with all the opposition mounted at this new branch of its sex shop, Adult World should have second thoughts as well.
